When building an entire city or a mega-structure, viewers can easily become overwhelmed and not know what to look at. Saliency is the trick of using highly contrasting colors, lighting variations, or broken geometry to 'force' a player's eyes exactly to where you want them to focus, such as a castle gate or a prominent market square.
